It is one of the old wives tales that is inadvisable to try.It will severely dry your skin out and causing the skin to overproduce oily sebum to compensate, and more importantly will kill all the bacteria that live on your skin, not just the bad ones. Although it sounds gross, we need good bacteria to perform certain functions such as reduce inflammation and kill the bad bacteria that do trigger acne breakouts.
To keep your skin clean from harmful, acne causing bacteria, wash your face or affected area of your body at least twice a day using a mild, fragrance free soap or face wash. There are plenty of products on the market, so you will have to choose what is best for you and your skin type. Ideally the less ingredients the better. Do Try a Lemon Juice Cleanser
Rather than use alcohol or products containing alcohol, lemon juice is one of the best home remedies for acne and produces great results. Instead of killing all the bacteria found living in the face, it targets only the acne causing, more harmful types of bacteria, living the good stuff to do its job.
Lemons are very efficient at cleansing the pores of acne effected skin and will not dry it out, like alcohol. Plus has the added advantage of vitamin C, which is one of the best vitamins for maintaining clear, young looking skin. It also helps fight inflammation caused by acne.
To use, apply small amounts of pure lemon juice to washed skin using a cotton wool pad. There may be stinging so take care when applying to extremely bad areas.
Try an Soothing Oatmeal Face Mask
Oatmeal, such as porridge is exceptionally good for you, the Scots kept the English out for years by eating this stuff! Not only does it help lower bad cholesterol, it provides a slow release energy that keeps you fuelled for a long period helping preventing cravings for less healthy foods.
The kicker is it is also a great home made acne face mask which when used, will help remove excess oils from the skin, unblocking the clogged pores that cause some types of acne breakouts. Here is a very simple recipe for a home made face mask using household ingredients. You will need:
- 1 tablespoon of good quality oatmeal or rolled oats
- 2 teaspoons of honey
- 3/4 teaspoon of lemon juice
Then, when you are ready:
- Using a small grinder, turn the oatmeal to a powder.
- In a small bowl, mix the ground oatmeal, honey and lemon juice, 1/4 tsp at a time, until a thick paste is formed.
- After washing your face, apply face mask onto entire face except eye area for 20-30 minutes.
- Rinse off the mask by gently massaging in circular motion to loosen.
- Follow up with your usual routine.
